Welcome friends. I have been silent far too long and have failed to contribute properly to the site. No longer will I leave all the heavy lifting to my dear friend 8one6. This will be the first of a weekly column wherein I, W.D.R., will share with you what is going on in the twisted labyrinth that is my mind. This is the second attempt at this column.
The first was thwarted last week by the charming midwest weather. I went out to move a car and managed toose footing on the ice, dropping like a 200 pound sandbag. After laying in a icy puddle wondering if any of the ribs I had landed on were broken (they were not), I decided that a long rest was in order. This brings me to the current bit of meteorological excitement, the Great Snowmeggeddon of 2011. I had the great joy of driving home from work in a blizzard on Tuesday. There is no fun like the fun of driving in white out conditions. Gamemasters out there take note, this would be a great environmental hazard for a chase in your game. Plus when the players blow a roll and end up wrapped around a tree or stuck in a ditch, they can have the fun of trying to get somewhere without becoming casualties of the cold.
Other than the weather, dominating my thoughts this week is a video game. I don’t play many but I may have fallen victim to the time sink hypnosis that is Minecraft. Simple graphics and gameplay that is best described by 8one6 as a tactical mining simulator have me hooked. It is a builders game. The main thing is to acquire resources and use them to build something. I have seen screencaps of giant Japanese inspired palaces, a pixel portrait of Darth Vader, and a world braking ball of TNT. I would recommend this game but I would end up feeling like a crack dealer. It is a fun game but enter at your own risk. You have been warned.
Next time I will be discussing my latest tabletop game obsession, Federation Commander, along with whatever else catches my fancy. Keep on gaming and we will chat again next week.
